One of your greatest concerns about your divorce is likely how it will affect your child. This is often the number one worry cited by parents who are divorcing. Divorce affects each child differently. Some children feel the divorce is their fault, are resistant to the new schedule, have difficulty in school while they are adjusting, or become angry with either or both parents. All of these reactions are normal and will improve with time, but there are some things you can do to provide your child with support during this difficult period.
Your child’s school. Your child’s school can be a huge source of support. If your child is in elementary school, talk to the classroom teacher and let know about the divorce. Looping the teacher on what is going on in your family will allow her to better help your child through the school day. If your school has a social worker on staff, get in touch with that person. Some schools offer peer group counseling sessions for children dealing with family problems. For middle schools and high schools, your contact should be the guidance counselor. He can let all of your child’s teacher know what is happening and monitor your child’s grades and behavior.
Family support. This is the time in your child’s life when having grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other involved relatives can really help. Having your family rally around your child can make a big difference at a point when your child may be feeling stressed about changes to the nuclear family. A grandparent or aunt who can spend some special time with your child and just listen can be invaluable.
Child therapist. Your pediatrician should be able to refer you to a child therapist in your area who has experience working with children who are dealing with divorce. Your lawyer or your own therapist may also be a good source of referrals. Counseling sessions can be just what your child needs to get through the adjustment to the divorce.
