Divorce is a time of great change. The end of your marriage and your life as a spouse is a huge loss to overcome, but one that you understand will be part of the process going in. Divorce brings other unexpected losses with it and understanding them will help you prepare and be able to persevere. Other losses include:
- Friends. This may be an unexpected loss but one most people face. Some friends may side with your spouse and no longer be there for you. Other friends may distance themselves from divorce because they feel uncomfortable in emotional situations and are unable to offer you real support. Friends you saw as a couple may find it difficult to socialize with you as a newly single person because the dynamic is so vastly different. This is a time in your life to hold close the friends who remain loyal and expand your circles to find new friends who can embrace the journey you are on.
- Family. If you and your spouse are parents together, the divorce ends your life as an intact nuclear family. You will still be a family, but in a different way. In addition, in most divorces you lose the entire half of your family that you were related to by marriage. No matter how close you were and how good everyone’s intentions are, you will never be a close part of your in-law family again in the same way.
- Confidence and self-esteem. Divorce can shake you to your very core and make you feel uncertain about your future, your attractiveness, your value as a person, and your ability to function on your own in the world. All of this is normal and none of it changes the fact that you are a strong, lovable person who will be able to move forward to a bright future.
- Money. Divorce has financial repercussions. Some are immediately obvious, but others take time to emerge. You have to take charge of your financial life and create a new budget that encompasses your new reality. Give yourself a full year after the divorce to see what your new life will be like and to adjust your financial plan as you go.
