When Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton divorced, country music fans all across the country cried. The story seems to have played out along the lines of the lyrics from a country song, with Shelton moving on quickly to date fellow The Voice co-star Gwen Stefani and Lambert seemingly licking her wounds. Since the split, fans of the famous pair have been left scratching their heads and wondering “what went wrong?”
The truth is that marriage is hard work, and when you are famous and spend the large majority of your time apart, it is made even harder. Lambert recently opened up about the split to Cosmopolitan magazine, and some of the lessons we can all take away from this celebrity split include things like the following:
- Everyone heals differently, so don’t be in a hurry to start dating again after your divorce. Instead, take the time you need to feel ready for a relationship again, and be happy to be your own best friend.
- Divorce is hard, even a “friendly” case. Just because the parties “remain friends” and are able to co-parent or make other joint decisions (based on the unique facts of each case), does not mean the process is not emotionally trying.
- Every relationship is a chance to grow and to learn, even relationships that end in divorce. When you can recognize the changes you’ve made, and identify areas of opportunity, you will know that your life experiences have helped you move from one phase to the next. Sometimes it takes an ending of one chapter to start something new.
It is important to remember that every case is different, so do not expect your process to be the same as a close friend or family member. Some cases involve large estates, while others contain more modest assets. Not every couple has children, so developing a parenting plan is not required in every case, nor is coming up with a workable visitation schedule.
